Why do we ask so many questions on our adoption application?

We get it. Some of the questions on an adoption application can feel surprisingly detailed.What kind of companion are you looking for?What is your activity level?What do you want to do with your new companion?Will they be indoors or indoors and outdoors?Do you rent or own your home?If you rent, can we confirm that your landlord allows pets?We’re not asking these questions to make adoption difficult. We’re asking because matching an animal with the right home is about much more than whether someone thinks they’re cute.

What kind of companion are you looking for?

Every animal is different.Some dogs are ready for an adventure every morning. Others would be perfectly happy spending the day beside you on the couch. Some cats want constant interaction. Others prefer affection on their own terms.We want to understand what you’re hoping for in a companion so we can help match you with an animal whose personality, energy level and needs fit your lifestyle.

What will your animal’s life look like?

Every animal is different.We want to know about your plans because an animal is joining your everyday life, not just your home.Are you looking for a hiking buddy? A relaxed companion? A playful animal for a busy household? A quiet friend who will happily curl up beside you?There isn’t one “right” answer. We simply want to find the right fit.We want to understand what you’re hoping for in a companion so we can help match you with an animal whose personality, energy level and needs fit your lifestyle.

Question 4

Will your cat be indoors or indoors and outdoors?

This is particularly important to us.We see far too many cats who come to rescue after experiencing horrific conditions outdoors. Injuries, disease, parasites, predators, vehicles, extreme weather, territorial fights, intentional harm and simply disappearing are all very real risks. So when someone tells us their cat will have outdoor access, we want to understand what “outdoor” actually means.Does that mean wandering the neighbourhood unsupervised?A secure catio?A fenced enclosure?Leash or harness walks?Supervised time in the yard? Those are very different situations.We aren’t trying to tell every adopter how they have to live. We are trying to make sure an animal who has already needed rescue isn’t being placed into circumstances where they could face the same dangers again.

Question 5

Why do you need a lease agreement?

If you rent your home, we need to know that pets are permitted.This protects you and the animal.The last thing we want is for someone to adopt an animal, only to discover that their landlord doesn’t allow pets. That can put everyone in an incredibly difficult position and may ultimately result in the animal being surrendered back to rescue.We want to prevent that situation before it happens.

Question 6

Why do we need confirmation that you own your home?

For the same reason.If you own your home, we may ask for reasonable confirmation because we want to know that the animal is actually permitted to live there.This isn’t about judging your home, your income or your personal circumstances. It’s about making sure the animal isn’t placed in the middle of a dispute over whether they are allowed to be there.
