ADELE'S STORY
Adele came into our care during the Fall of 2023, she was brought in with 13 others from the same property in a small town in Alberta. After 3 months of growing rapidly, going for her Spay surgery and having had all her vaccinations, things took a rapid turn for her. Within a very short time (less than 24 hrs), we saw Adele go from a playful, cuddly, and energetic kitten, to one who couldn't hold her head up. We rushed her to the clinic for a check up, and after a struggle to get enough blood for testing, they finally came back with a tentative diagnosis...FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis). This uncommon, but rapidly moving infection wreaks havoc on cats organs, resulting in a painful death without treatment. Cats are notorious for hiding pain, and Adele was very good at this. We started her on treatment immediately following our vet visit, but within 24hrs we were rushing her back to the clinic as her vitals were crashing. Sadly we could not save this beautiful soul. Through the heartbreak, we learned some very valuable information that proved to be very useful as we carried on into 2024 and faced 7 more FIP diagnoses.
As we were still grieving the loss of Adele, we knew we wanted to do everything we could to help others who might face a similar diagnosis with their own cat and in light of this we created a fund to help support those who otherwise might not have the means to treat their companion.
The ‘Adele’s FIP Champion Fund’ was created in Adele's honour to ensure her short battle and wonderful but short life, will never be forgotten.
FIP treatment costs have a great range because no two cases are identical. But as a guide, costs range from about $800 and up. Many cases will run into the thousands. This is not solely due to the cost of medication for the infection, but for mandatory blood testing every 30 days, veterinary health checks, various diagnostics, pain medications, appetite stimulants, anti-nausea meds, and the list goes on.
We have been designating 10% of all general donations into Adele's FIP Champion Fund, and since doing so, we have helped one cat through the entirety of the course of treatment, complete with bloodwork, nutritional support, and medication.
We never want anyone to feel that they only have one choice when facing this scary news of FIP infection in their companion.
